How to Make Fake Snow

I keep seeing these fake snow sensory bins online, so I wanted to give it a try! We tried 3 different techniques to find the best one. See below for our rankings! It's a lot of fun and your toddler can even help make it because it's super simple! Beware though... I just put the bin on the floor and there was "snow" everywhere! So maybe put the bin in a baby pool or on a plastic tablecloth unless you have a much cleaner toddler than me! Hunter thought it was funny to make snow balls and although he aimed at the bin, his aim is not so great yet! Here is how to make the snow and what we thought about each technique:

1st Place

Baking Soda & Conditioner

How to make it: Mix 2 1/2 cups of baking soda with 1/2 cup white conditioner. Add a little extra conditioner to make it more packable.

This was our favorite fake snow. The texture is great, it looked like real snow and it was easy to pack together to make snowmen! It also smelled great because I bought coconut scented conditioner.

2nd Place

Baking Soda & Shaving Cream

How to Make it: Mix equal parts of baking soda & shaving cream. Again, more shaving cream will make it easier to pack.

This was a very close second. The texture was similar to the first and worked well for packing. I actually ended up mixing them together.

3rd Place

Baby Diaper & Water

How to make it: Cut a baby diaper and empty the filling into a container. I used a nighttime diaper so it would have extra filling. Slowly add water while crumbling it in your hands until desired texture is reached.

The benefit of this technique is that you definitely have the supplies in your house already. The look is good but the texture was a little strange and you can not pack it to make snowmen or snowballs.

What to do with your fake snow:

  1. Just add some spoons and cups for scooping.

  2. Add small animal figurines (we buried them in the snow and then searched for them).

  3. Add easy to clean plastic trucks. Anything trucks is a win with Hunter.

  4. Add snowman accessories. I think this was the most fun. I included tiny carrots, pipe cleaners for arms, little hats and black beans for "coal".

Enjoy your indoor snow!
