Our Favorite Toys for Learning the Alphabet

Hunter is almost 2.5 years old and has known his alphabet for a few months. My husband and I are both certified teachers so we do a lot of teaching through play with him but I really attribute his learning of letters to these 4 toys! I don’t get paid by any of these companies. I just love them and think they are fantastic learning tools. Most importantly, they are Hunter approved!

Soft Foam Alphabet Cards

This was our first alphabet toy. I bought them when Hunter was 7 months old. My husband went through the cards with him everyday. They are soft foam cards so they are perfect for little ones and they have animals on them as well. You could definitely start with the animals but my husband did the letters also. Honestly I thought he was a little crazy but it definitely worked!

Magnetic Letters

This is a foam set of magnetic letters with upper case letters, lower case letters and numbers. I like these because the entire back is covered in a magnet so there is no chance of a tiny magnet popping off and possibly being put in your little one’s mouth. Of course these can go on your refrigerator but I also like to play with them on a cookie tray. It feels like more of an activity/lesson to me when we sit down with our tray together and talk about the letters.

A if for Apple Book by Georgie Birkett

I am obsessed with this book! It is by far my favorite alphabet book I have found. I can’t recommend it enough! Each page is its own letter which makes it easy to focus. The letters are indented so you can trace them with your fingers helping form skills for writing letters in the future. Best of all, it is a flap book! Kids love flap books. It also helps them associate letters to words.

Alphabet Puzzle

This puzzle is a little challenging but I love the wooden letters! When we first got the puzzle, I would just take out a few pieces at a time to work on the letters. I even like to hide them in my sensory bins sometimes for added fun. Once he got a little better with letters, I now help by saying things like “W is for Walrus” To help him complete the puzzle without getting discouraged and giving up.

I hope you enjoy some of our favorite alphabet toys!
